The Event

Houston’s Home for Pop Culture

Comicpalooza is a multi-day pop-culture convention in Houston, Texas, bringing together fans, cosplayers, exhibitors, artists, celebrities, and entertainment-industry guests.

The event spans multiple areas of interest, including comics, gaming, science fiction, fantasy, anime, film, and television. Its programming includes guest appearances, panels, special events, exhibitors, and community activities.

As the convention expanded, attendees needed a reliable online destination where they could find event information, explore programming, follow announcements, and plan their experience.

The challenge

Moving Beyond a Basic Blog and Social Media Presence

Before this work, Comicpalooza’s online presence relied primarily on a WordPress blog and a Facebook group. These channels supported announcements and community engagement, but they did not provide the comprehensive digital experience attendees needed to navigate a large, multi-day convention.

There was an opportunity to establish a more complete online presence: one that brought event information, guest announcements, schedules, exhibitor details, and visitor resources together in a more organized and accessible experience.
The challenge was not simply to update a website. It was to build out the digital information structure and supporting content needed to serve multiple audiences before, during, and after the event.

The new platform had to accommodate:

☑ Ticket and pass information

☑ Schedules, panels, and activities

☑ Guest announcements and profiles

☑ Exhibitor and vendor information

☑ Travel and venue details

☑ Press and media resources

☑ Event news and promotional updates

Comicpalooza Website | 2016–2018

Building the Digital Foundation

Following Comicpalooza’s acquisition by HoustonFirst Corporation in partnership with the George R. Brown Convention Center, I was the first to build out its comprehensive website as part of the Marketing and Communications department.

From 2016 to 2018, I helped establish the online destination that connected attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, guests, and media with the convention.

The website brought together guest announcements, schedules, tickets, exhibitor information, event news, and visitor resources, helping establish the digital foundation for the Comicpalooza audiences know today.

Audience Engagement, Guest Relations & Event Operations

Comicpalooza brought together audiences with very different interests, from comics, gaming, anime, science fiction, and film to literature, sports, and family programming. The website helped visitors explore these different tracks, discover events and activities, and plan their convention experience. I spoke directly with attendees and cosplayers at the convention, gathering firsthand feedback about what they enjoyed, what they were looking for, and how they navigated the event.

I also worked with entertainment-industry guests, assisting with logistics and supporting activities at panels, backstage areas, and booths. These experiences helped me understand the needs of the convention's diverse audiences and the coordination required to support their experience.

Takeaway & Project Reflection

As part of the Marketing and Communications department, I helped establish Comicpalooza’s first comprehensive website following its acquisition by Houston First Corporation. The project brought together website development, UX/UI, content strategy, digital marketing, and direct audience engagement to create a more connected experience for attendees, exhibitors, guests, and media. Being involved both behind the scenes and on-site gave me a broader understanding of how digital experiences support real-world events—and how thoughtful content, organization, and communication help bring diverse audiences together.

WHAT THIS PROJECT DEMONSTRATES

This project brought together digital platform development, UX/UI and information architecture, marketing and communications, content strategy, SEO, audience research, and cross-functional event coordination. It demonstrates how I connected digital design with real-world audience needs to help establish and support a growing convention experience.
